Exit To Spring Time
What a week and it isn’t over. On Thurday morning I went to WWOZ with my new friend, Libra, who was representing the Ogden Museum, OZ was cool enough to play three of my tunes from Exit To Mystery Street on that show. I left OZ and attended a songwriting seminar given by Grammy Nominated writer Tift Merrit as part of the Tennessee Willams Festival, it was very interesting hearing about someone else’s process. Went straight from there to the Ogden Museum to play in a beautiful atmosphere to folks who respect art and artists enough to listen and to allow themselves to engage as well. In the middle of the show Guy fiore’, who is a friend from my days with the Mouth, snuck in to listen for a while. Guy is from the West Coast and owns a couple of restaurants out there, he used to stuff us with sushi whenever we were close enough to get sushi to us. After he’d stuff us most of the band would sneak off for naps but I used to like to play a few songs for Guy and his mom Penny. Penny is a sweet woman who loves her son and a lot of the same songs as I do so I always looked forward to seeing her and singing to her. Guy has since gone on to become a celebrity chef with a traveling cooking show which had brought him to New Orleans. It was sweet to see him and remember his journey began with his passion for food and feeding people. A cool reminder to follow my passion and trust the business will follow. Part of the program at the Ogden is an interview segment and the journalist was Alex Rawls of Off Beat who works hard to write about and help keep vital the New Orleans music scene. He is also someone I respect as a friend so it was nice to trade thoughts on music for an audience. Friday I went to a panel discussion with Jim McCormick, a great writer and old Bourre’ playing friend, and Tift Merritt. the panel discussion was moderated by Mark Hernandez a professor of history at Loyola and a songwriter himself. It was again very interesting to hear how others write and feel about themselves as writers. That night I opened for Tift Merritt at the Parish and it was a lovely surprise to walk in and see reserved seating and candles, an atmosphere that suggested listening. She had a packed room of folks waiting to hear her sing and I don’t know how many of them knew who I was but they couldn’t have been more attentive. Listening, laughing and falling hushed in all the right places and as I said to them even being inappropriate once or twice at the the exact right time. Tonight I’m playing John Boutte’s normal seven to ten set at d.b.a. because he is performing in Minnessota. I am honored to be backed this evening by Leroy Jones, one of the finest trumpet players in New Orleans or anywhere, and Peter Harris on bass. Peter and I have worked together through John but this is the first time he will be backing me and I look forward listening to him stretch my tunes in the way I’ve heard him do countless nights as I listened to him play with John. While I’m honored they agreed to back me I must be humble enough to admit that it was only when Boutte announced from the stage last week that he was out of town and I would be playing that they looked at each other with surprised faces and we all quickly agreed to be a band for the night. They are gracious men and I hope to delight in what they bring to my songs and hope they dig what take I bring to songs they play regularly. What an exhilarating weekend for me, just wanted to share how wonderful it felt to be connected to so much creativity for the week. Thanks for the on going gentle reminders that life goes on and that how we handle the changes determines the quality of our lives. Some have come in e-mails, some in person and the best by example. Fate is kind like that. red beans and ricely yours, Sanchmo |
