Bo knows cool
Bo is cool. Years ago when the Mouth was first getting started we drove 15 hours from Jackson, Mississippi where we played a double wide called W.C. Don's to Charlotte, NC so that we could open for Bo for $150.00. The thing was, the opener got to be the backing band. Bo, like Chuck Berry uses the opener in whatever town he plays and we wanted to back Bo so we begged for the gig. He arrived and eyed us with contempt, just another white boy backing band. He went into the first song without saying the key or the title but we were big fans for years so we knew the song. Bo waved us off after a verse chorus and smiled for the first time all day, (he'd been scowling since he arrived), and spoke to us for the first time all day saying, "ye-e-ah, we gonna have some fun tonight". Then the promoter walked up all smiles and wanting to take care of Bo he said, " Mr. Didley, we have a car waiting and reservations at one of the best restaurants in Charlotte." Bo was not happy, "Restaurant? I'm tired and I don't want to go to no restaurant." The promoter was young and scared and stammered, "but Mr. Didley, it says in your contract that you require a meal after sound check!?". "That's right", Bo said glaring, "I get some Churches Fried Chicken in my hotel room!", and he walked away. Backing Bo that night was something I'll never forget. I'd played his stuff since I could play because it was easy,(many of his songs are one chord), and because he rocks. Certainly nobody ever rocked one chord harder. Bo dug us as well. He played for over two hours though he'd only been contracted for an hour and a half. we hung out for a while after the show and Bo offered the best advice anyone has ever given me about playing music. He said, 'I like you fellas and I'm gonna tell ya' something I want you to remember. Keep it Simple and Think Of Church." red beans and ricely yours, Sanchmo |
