Reenactment Group Helps Conserve Original Confederate Flags

The Tennessee State Museum will be the recipient of donations from a mid-Atlantic based civil war reenactment organization, the Confederate Military Forces (the CMF) which with matching funds, will be able to conserve two of the museum’s flags that were carried by the regiments of Archer’s Brigade during the War Between the States.

The CMF approached the museum several years ago with an offer to try and raise some funds to help conserve any of the flags that were carried by the Army of Northern Virginia. A battle flag of the First Tennessee (Provisional Army) and a company flag of the Seventh Tennessee’s ‘Lebanon Greys’ were identified by the museum as “needing urgent attention.”

By hosting preservation marches, participating in movies, selling raffle tickets, and soliciting many private donations, the CMF was able to raise more than $14000. Along with matching funds, the CMF was able to meet it’s goal to have these two flags conserved. The official presentation of the funds will take place in Nashville at the Tennessee State Museum on May 20 at 2:00 P.M. Members of the CMF will be traveling from as far away as New York to participate in this public presentation.

The CMF is hoping that the publicity generated from this ceremony will spark the interest in other like minded organizations to appreciate and also help preserve the treasures in our museums so these priceless artifacts may be safely viewed and studied by future generations.

The Tennessee State Museum is located in downtown Nashville at Fifth and Deaderick Streets in the James K. Polk Building/Tennessee Performing Arts Center Complex. The museum is open Tuesday thru Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sundays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. (The Military branch is closed on Sundays.) Admission is free.

Parking for the museum is available on adjacent city streets and in paid parking lots and garages. On weekends, visitors may park free in the state employee parking lots located to the north and west of the State Capitol. For further information, visit the museum's website, www.tnmuseum.org, or contact the museum by phone at (615) 741-2692
