Message:   I came across the following information that I though might be of interest to the three CMF Tennessee regiments:

* Prior to joining the Confederacy, Tennessee had received the following arms from the US government under the 1808 Militia Act:

15,087 US Model 1816 and 1822 flintlock Muskets
1,033 US Model 1822 Muskets altered to percussion
1,300 US Model 1841 Rifles
732 US Model 1855 Rifle Muskets
530 US Model 1855 Cadet Rifle Muskets (slightly shorter version of the 1885)

* In September of 1860, the state requisitioned a Percussioning Machine and 1,000 hammers and cones to convert flintlock muskets to percussion using the cone-in-barrel method. These items were requested under the 1801 Militia Act. In October of 1860, 2,000 additional hammers and cones had been requisitioned. It appears that these items were used to convert 3,000 flintlocks (likely all M1822s) to percussion at the state arsenal in Nashville.

* By 31 July 1861 the Provisional Army of Tennessee consisted of 22 regiments, 15 of which were infantry - these appear to have been armed with flintlock muskets except as follows:

The 1st and a portion of the 11th regiments were
armed with the Model 1855 Rifle Muskets and 1855
Cadet Rifle Muskets.

The 7th was armed with Model 1841 Rifles. These
appear to have been supplied from the
Confederate government - being contractor built
models by Robbins & Lawrence and supplied from
Montgomery. The Robbins & Lawrence Model 1841
was identical to the US Armory made 1841, save
for the markings. Robbins & Lawrence were one
of the few contractors willing to accept a
government contract for this arm, which required
interchangeability of parts.

* Four (4) other Tennessee regiments (3rd, 8th, 14th and 154th) were armed with Muskets altered to percussion. It is not known whether these arms were from the original 1,033 in stock at the state arsenal, or from flintlocks altered by the state using the machinery and parts received under the 1808 Militia Act. There is also some suggestion that since these four regiments were detailed to the Confederate government, their altered arms were provided by the Confederacy. Indeed, there is a record that the Confederacy shipped, and Tennessee received 4,000 muskets.
