Message:   This is indeed an interesting study. Descending from the reactivated Archer’s Tennessee Brigade, many of us have always hungered for the tid bids of information associated with the regiments that comprised this brigade. Just when you read somewhere that a particular regiment was armed exclusively with a specified weapon, something else always comes to light to alter that conclusion.

If I may augment Jim’s study with a few additions: In a letter to his wife, Colonel Robert Hatton of the 7th Tennessee wrote that he was able to secure Mississippi rifles for his regiment but not the bayonets. Years ago I saw an interesting display of a reputable collector and dealer at the Gettysburg Relic Show which featured a ‘61 Springfield identified to a member of the 7th Tennessee. How long did the 7th actually carry the M ‘41's and what were the circumstances that made this soldier trade his rifle for a rifle musket?

The 1st Tennessee (Prov Army) was issued converted flint locks at Richmond along with the leather gear..minus the cap pouches. An early war photo of a member of G company attests to this clearly showing him sporting a ‘16 conversation. However at Richmond, there was a near mutiny by the regiments with their refusal to accept these antiques. After a speech by President Davis to the regiment, all of the companies accepted the smooth bores with the exception of F company. They request and received permission to send someone back to Tennessee to get 64 “long-shooting guns” that belonged to their home town’s militia company. What were these guns and did they in fact ever get them?
