Message:   My understanding of genetics is that you have one 'copy' of everything and you either pass it on to a child or you don't. The mutation may be one on of the male-related genetic element's in Paul's case - so it is more likely to be attached to the male DNA he passed to Jake. Genetics has so much more to reveal.

As to the survivors of the Black Death - that is possible for two reasons.
1: because Judaism is a matriarchal heritage it is easier to trace a definite line (we know who gave birth to the child ; we can't always be certain who fathered it) so any genetic legacy could pass through the maternal myochondrial (I thinkj I spelt that right) DNA. Mutations attach themselves to varying elements

2 : Like most Ashkenazi Jews Paul's ancestors probably lived in 'Middle Europe'(wherever they were permitted to do so by the all-powerful catholic church and moved on as and when they were chased/forced to do so (and eventually escaped progroms or worse by going to the US or the UK). The Black Death like all plagues at that time was immediately blamed on the Jews who were regularly accused of poisoning wells etc and for once a pope stood up for them (in his way) by pointing out that Jews were dying from it too so it probably wasn't their fault this time!
