I’ll be taking part in AIDS Walk Africa 2008 being organised by the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric Aids Foundation (EGPAF) which will soon take place in Swaziland and any support you might like to give would be very much appreciated.
At 48 years of age and carrying a few (ahem!) extra pounds, I am sure the walk will be a personal challenge. Heading off to Africa on my own is also a bit of a scary prospect, but I hope it will turn out to be an unforgettable experience. I will have the privilege of witnessing first-hand some of the great work that EGPAF is doing on the ground in Swaziland. Please rest assured that I am covering all personal costs myself so any donations will go 100% to EGPAF.
As many of you will already know, the Foundation leads the way in the battle against the global epidemic of paediatric AIDS. The shocking statistics are that every day an estimated 1,200 children become newly infected with HIV. Without treatment, 30% of children with HIV die in their first year of life, while 60% will not reach their 3rdbirthday.
EGPAF seeks both to prevent paediatric HIV infection and to eradicate it through research, advocacy together with prevention and treatment programmes. The Foundation is currently engaged in health initiative programmes in 18 countries and supports hands-on, life-saving services at 2,800 sites around the world.
