Message:   Hi! Lads,
In todays paper there is a tribute to all those airman from several countries who kept the city of berlin open after the Russian Blockade threatened to starve them into submission,it was a mammoth task to keep the West germans supplied with food and fuel, despite being harrassed by Soviet fighters etc,and when the blockade was lifted in 1949 as the Russians finally realised they could not win, berlin which was surrounded by the the Russians, finally became a part of West germany.Outside the visitors centre at Alrewas is a memorial to all these fliers and the names of those who died during this airlift are on the new memorial. It is of a Eagle with outstretched wings,a very fitting tribute. When I first joined up with Airfield Construction we paid a visit to Gatow, and saw how difficult it must have been to keep up a constant flow of aircraft into this airfield completely surrounded by a built up area, and a small air corridor which the Russians allowed ,and which they would have shot down any aircraft who strayed off it.They all deserve a medal, yet no commendation was made at all.take care lads,

God Bless
Tony
