Re: peace corps funding

Hi Michelle,
I'm not sure about load deferments because I didn't have any but I think your didn't have to pay interest while you were in PC nor did it accrue. As far as $ is concerned, you get a small living allowance which is enough for most volunteers to live on. They give you some money to get settled into your new house at post. They also give you some money when you're done to get back on your feet in the US. In 1997 it was $5,000. Depending on your lifestyle, and availability of goods, you may want to bring some money from the US to suppelment your small PC income. I have answered a similar question in detail on the Fon is Fun Forum on an entry dated 5/24/01. Let me know if you have any questions after reading it. Bonne Chance!

Chris

My African studies professor told our class that the countries where PCV serve end up paying some of the volunteer expenses (loan deferments, etc). Is this true? aside from taxes, where does the funding come from? Thanks,
Michelle
