Re: getting sick

Hi Zinnia,

I don't mean to scare you by everyone gets sick sans exception! It's a fact of going to Benin. You will get diarrhea (probably pretty often). This is due to hygiene problems but the more careful you are about what and where you eat and drink, the less likely it will happen. The problem is that most volunteers get lazy and don't treat their water and eat more street food. Diarrhea is usually only a nuisance and doesn't cause major problems unless you get giardia or other parasites like dysentary. If you get really sick you can go to the Med unit at the embassy in Cotonou. There were French and Dutch nurses there when I was in Benin and they take good care of you. The great part is that you get hot showers and A/C ! If you are really sick or have an emergency, they will medevac you to either Cote D'Ivoire or Wash. DC until you get better.
