Re: Sending mail home

It is not cheap. There are also other options, some work more often than others. It is advisable to bring a fair number of US stamps (though if they keep raising the postage this will not be very helpful). Be sure and get the self stick and NOT the glue variety as the humidity will quickly render the latter useless.

Option #1: While in Cotonou (or other large towns) one can sometimes find someone (PCV other otherwise) on their way Stateside who is all too willing to carry a few LETTERS (not packages) and drop them in the nearest post box once they get home.

Option #2 (sometimes worked) (this is cheating): Write a bunch of letters, put them in addressed (US) stamped enveloppes, and package them all together and mail them as a bulk package to one person in the US (who will drop the others in the mail). Do the math, depending on the cost of the bulk package rate this (used to) work once you have a certain number of letters to mail.

Good luck and have fun!

Greg

Thanks for all the good info,

One more question....

Is it expensive to send letters to the U.S.? (relatively speaking to our monthly allowance)
