I’ve been trying to find more information on the father of Bazile Broussard, Destoil Broussard. This is how far I’ve been able to get up our Broussard family tree starting with my paternal grandmother...

1. Mary Louise Broussard-Gregory born 6 May 1925 in TX and died 7 Jul 2001 in St. Louis, MO: daughter of Burness Broussard Sr. Married Willie Bob Sr. Gregory (born 1912 Chickasaw, MS and died 1970 in St. Louis, MO). Children: Curtis, Sandra, Debra, Linda, Willie Bob Jr.

2. Burness Broussard Sr. born 1891 in Saint Martin, LA and died April 1964 in Port Author, TX. Married *Setular Lovan-Broussard (born 1893 in New Iberia, LA to John and Louise Abram-Lovan and died 24 Sep 1984 in St. Louis, MO). Children besides Mary Louise: Alton b.1909, Alston b. 1912, Burness Jr b. 1913, Helen Broussard-Riley b.1918, Lawrence b. 1919, Alfred b. 1923, Dorothy Broussard-Lombard b. 1928, Gladys Broussard-Nowlin b. 1931

3. Bazile Broussard born 1868 in LA died 1945 in Port Arthur, TX: son of Henriette Riot(e)-Simon (Harriet Sims?) and Destoil Broussard. Married Mary Lavelle-Broussard (born 1872 in LA). 1930 census has them living in Jefferson, TX. Children besides Burness: Cleveland born 1894 died 1965 or 1970 in Jefferson County, TX (in WWI?), Herbert, Plush, Clevon, Beulah, Edith, Evedar, Aaron, Vida

4. Henriette Riot(e)-Simon born 1859 in LA: married Gustave Simon. Children besides Bazile: Anna Deblane (Deblanc?) born 1872, Octavie Simon-Bellow (Belleau) born 1873, Willie Simon born 1878, Yancy Simon born 1887. 1870 Census: Henriette and Bazile are living with Anny Riot in LA. 1880 Henriette and Bazile are living with Gustave Simon in St. Martin, LA. 1900 Census: Henriette is living with Newon Simon in St. Martin, LA. Gustave has changed his name to Newon.

5. Anny Riot(e) born 1821 or 1827 in LA(?): mother of Henrietta. Children besides Henriette: Gabriel born 1847, Ugenie born 1852, Idine born 1854, Pierre 1858

We have family in LA, TX, MO and CA.

*Lovan also spelled Lavan, LaVann. A 2nd cousin told me that family legend has it that Setular's father was a white sheriff in St. Martinville. She refused to talk about it to a 2nd cousin and my grandmother told me she didn't like to talk about it. An obituary has Setular being born in New Iberia. I will have to find her birth certificate to verify which parish she was born in.

I found Bazile Broussard's death certificate. His father is listed as Destoil which is an unusual name. The mother is listed as Harriet Sims, I think this is a variation of Henriette Simon. My g-grandfather Burness (Berniece) couldn't read or write. I thought of alternate spellings for Destoil such as Des Estoile, Destoile, D'estoile, De Stoile.

Have you ever heard of the name Destoil? Or know of any ways its been spelled?

What about the surname Riot, what are other ways to spell it?
