PHRESH: A Celebration of Women in Hip-Hop
All Day Saturday, Feb 11 | Painted Bride Arts Center | Philadelphia

Such has remained the case today especially when it comes to women and hip-hop. Record labels have made the mainstream almost impenetrable for women unless they pick a hyper-sexualized identity like Lil Kim or can juggle more talents than their male counterparts, like Missy Elliott or Lauryn Hill. Enter: PHRESH. One-stop-shopping for ladies who love hip-hop and may wish to pursue a career in it, the full day of events includes DJing and b-girling workshops, a panel discussion, and a film screening. The evening culminates with a multimedia performance by Monthz and rebel rap-rocker Melene Younglao and versus, dance by montazh, art by stacey wilson, film by raeia, and dj ultraviolet. PHRESH indicates that there is indeed a renaissance a-brew.
