I've seen stills where that black band is not there, so it's very likely that there was more than one 'design' so to speak--guessing, at least.

Your friend Maria did get it. I'll be displaying it next year in LA at American Cinematheque when they do a tribute to him (in conjunction with the memorial) in 2008, as it will be 50 years.
