I take it all back....

....senility is creeping in! Agree about "Zorro", Nan. Completely forgot about that one (!) which is truly my favorite (with the others following).

I know everyone gets on the "Adventures of Robin Hood" bandwagon as the greatest swashbuckler, etc. of all time---and I'm not saying it's not, in all likelyhood--I just think that Zorro is a tighter, more humorous and edgier film; not to mention better, more sophisticated writing. And Power could act circles around Flynn and I think he hit it out of the ballpark with this one. My opinionated opinion, at least.

Re: What are your top 5 favorite Tyrone movies and why?

Hmmm... well, let's see - I tend to go for the older Tyrone films from the '30's, hard to pick five but I'll give it a try ... definitely love Marie Antoinette (I admit, just because he's so freakin' good looking in it =), then Jesse James (because it's the first one I ever saw him in. I was 10 and he was my first crush LOL), love the Razor's Edge (his acting was superb), Alexander's Ragtime Band (he was gorgeous again, and looked like he was having a lot of fun making this film), and then Thin Ice (love the lightheartedness of the Ty-Sonja films =)

I loved his later films too - but as he grew older he had an obvious sadness in his eyes, perhaps he knew he was sick, or missing Annabella - I don't know - but when I think of Ty, I like to think of him happy ...

A great topic, Kerry! =) Definitely got me to thinking ...

You think about Ty and the apparent heart disease. Today he'd be monitored for cholesterol, taking stress tests, etc.

Maybe, just maybe, quit smoking??

He might have seen his 94th year.

Re: Re: Re: What are your top 5 favorite Tyrone movies and why?

Too true - I wish we could have had him around much longer ...

Tyrone getting older

I wish he had at least seen his 70s. But I tell myself it simply wasn't meant to be. I can't imagine what he would've looked like in his 70s.

Re: Tyrone getting older

I thought Ty was looking more like Ty Sr. in the later years, though still strikingly handsome.

By passing away so young and immediately, Ty was saved from years of meds and congestive heart failure. Although we lost him rather young, God knew what he was doing and saved Ty alot of medical grief!

(I say this after watching my own parents go through heart disease.)

Re: Re: Tyrone getting older

That's true, Melody - I totally understand what you're saying ... suffering, and suffering for many years, is not something anyone should have to go through.

Still, he had so much more he could have offered - so many more things he could have done - and had years with his son, and daughters ... it was just a tragedy that he had to go so young...

Re: Re: What are your top 5 favorite Tyrone movies and why?

1- Witness for the Prosecution - this one has Ty Power loosing it on the witness stand, sweaty faced, with eyes huge and mouth contorted.... what a great actor as the smarmy Leonard Vole!!! He was so likable yet vile!
2- The Eddie Duchin Story - made me cry more than once. He was so great in it in every way, "Merry Christmas!" to great piano interpretation, etc.
3- The Long Grey Line - his brogue was so consistent, and great! Forgot it was Tyrone Power at times because he became "Marty"...
4- In Old Chicago - great movie, he was great, Ameche was great, Faye was great, and the mother was great.... superb fire and demolition, Ty gets hurt and is bleeding, completely adorable, wanted to hug him myself! Moving and terrible, great and terrible, huge cast, all I can say is "wow"!
5- Alexander's Ragtime Band - He did such a great job, and was so entertaining, handsome, and on cue for every instance! I thought the entire acting team was superb in this! Also, scenes of the SF Cliff House, Fairmont Hotel, etc, were wonderful, grand etc. The music was great, the walk through history was great, and the entire show was so well done!

Honorable Mention:
The Mask of Zorro (never get tired of this)
The Luck of the Irish (watched this so many times, and still, very cute)
Nightmare Alley (so creepy and intriguing that you can't look away.... BTW Great Title!
That Wonderful Urge (Gene Tierny is great in this)
The Razor's Edge (Should have won an award for HIS acting, and Gene Tierny was wonderful)
Son of Fury (he is beautiful in his swimsuit, and Tierny is also, plus the great fight scenes with fists - w/George Sanders)
Sun Also Rises (his voice in this was great, and he played so low key, angry, apathetic, self indulgent, with a great cast of co-actors)
Blood and Sand (he was so young and SOOO handsome.... I believed that he could fight bulls in this movie, and also that he couldn't read - put Valentino to shame in the adorable factor!!!)

It would be easier to mention movies of Ty's that I didn't like (there are only 3 of 48)
