In following up on the play, I bought the original Zorro novel by McCulley. There is some commentary about the history of Zorro since McCulley started the pulp fiction novels, and then the moview and serials.
They included a quote from Basil Rathbone on Ty's fencing saying that TP "could fence Errol Flynn into a cocked hat." They also commented on Ty's horseback and acting skills being better than Douglas Fairbanks original Zorro.
They actually comment pretty much on the 1940s film saying that it was more dramatic/eloquent than the original Fairbanks film. They have a synopsis of the film and the actors.
I finally bought a scanner. Maybe I can scan and send to you.
