Tyrone Power and the "Robe" and Elizabeth Taylor leading lady question please

Hello everyone,
New to this site and love it, love it, love it!!!
Thanks to all who have put this together it is the most amazing Hollywood tribute site to any actor I have ever seen with all the photos, news stories, letters, photots and material from his life I have ever seen. The photos are the best I have ever seen.
Thankyou to all the different links and person who put this together..fantastic really!!!!
Tyrone Power to me was and still is the most handsome male actor ever to grace the Hollywood movie screen. I grew up watching old movies and I thought boy he is handsom, beautiful and I still think the same. I am a big movie and movie star fan especially of the old hollywood movies--always will be. I have a question...well two questoins please that I need answered out of curiosity...........Tyrone Power was up for the role of Marcellus in the movie "The Robe", but Richard Burton got the role...does anyone know why Ty did not get the role or did he decline it...? Also being a fan of Elizabeth Taylor.. she was just gorgeous ...why didn't Tyrone Power and Elizabeth Taylor ever act together on screen. Was she too young, I am not sure but I do not think she would have been I may be wrong but I think they would have been a beautiful couple on screen. Maybe my time is off here and she was much later on ?........thanks for the info. anyone...............alex

Re: Tyrone Power and the "Robe" and Elizabeth Taylor leading lady question please

Alexandra--Mr. Zanuck purposely secured The Robe in hope of getting Tyrone Power back to Fox, and Ty did consider it, but Tyrone decided in the end to remain in live theatre and pursue his own projects. Knowing The Robe, Ty would have made a great Marcellus (IMHO).

Maybe others in "Ty" land can answer back about Liz Taylor. I believe she was under contract with MGM which could have caused them not to be paired together considering the studio system of that time.

And, too, Ty passed away in 1958, so who knows had he lived longer they would have done a movie together. Both of them having dark coloring would have made a striking pair.

Welcome aboard!

Hi Melody!!
Thanks for the info. That makes sense and now I unserstnd the movie set up more with contracts back then. Yes they would have made a fantastic leading man and woman on screen both so dark adn smouldering in looks could you imagine them together on film...WOW.anyway thanks again Melody. I hope one day I can get to see his grave and resting place and just say...Hey you were the best Ty..you still have fans many many years on. We still love ya baby!!
Thanks again--GREAT SITE --GREAT TRIBUTE TO THIS WONDERFUL ACTOR!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Alexandra,

I'll have to second Melody's post--and her welcome as well :-)! He wasn't too keen on the role (on the other hand, considering some of the fare he *was* doing at the time (Pony Soldier anyone?), "The Robe" wouldn't have been half bad.

There is an article (or two?) in the Newspaper Article section, if memory serves but I can't for the life of me remember which one.

He woulda been great (and vise versa) with Liz, agree! Considering he was freelancing in the 50's, the possibiity was certainly there.

(He was slated to star with Ingrid Bergman on stage in the Spring of '59 and that would have been a pairing to see as well.)

Hi Joanne,
Thanks for the info. Always great to get as much info. as possible etc. Ingrid Bergman, well that would have been great too. Such a pity he went way too soon.
