Re: Linda Darnell/New DVD Summer Storm

I haven't seen it but since it's directed by Douglas Sirk from a Chekhov story, and it stars Darnell and George Sanders, it is automatically of interest.

Re: Linda Darnell/New DVD Summer Storm

Agreed, Peachtree! Will check out the links. :)

Re: Linda Darnell/New DVD Summer Storm

Wow, that's GREAT news Melody, many thanks!

That's one Darnell film that I've never seen/been after for a while so that's good news indeed!

p.s.

another one I'd kill for is "Centennial Summer" but who knows when, or if, that one will ever be released (I've never been able to catch it on tv either.)

Not an official release, mind you. ;)

Re: p.s.

WOW, are you kidding me :-)!?!?!?!? This is terrific!! You're a magician!!!!!!! I'll definitely be ordering this one! Many thanks Peachtree!!

BTW, here is one that I'm excited about as well.....have been waiting for a long time for this one (at least, a release where they're doing it some justice) :-)!

Re: p.s.

Glad to help out with Centennial Summer. It only took a few minutes to find -- there are a lot of places on the web where you can buy rare old movies. :)

As for North by Northwest, my blu-ray copy is already on pre-order. :)

Now, why doesn't that surprise me !! Actually, I'm a bit curious as to what the quality/difference of blu-ray is like. I know they're saying that it's better, etc. but, IF you have time and are so inclinded and can drop a note, I'd love to know what you think, Peachtree.

Yeah, I can't believe they are finally releasing a version with some frills on it. Incredible it took this long actually. didn't buy the film on purpose in the hopes that they would ultimately release one with bells and whistles so this will be a big treat.

thanks again for the Centenial head's up, Peachtree!

Re: p.s.

Oh, I LOVE Blu-Ray! The picture quality is awesome -- the level of detail and clarity just blows me away, even on older movies. Of course it still all depends on how good the transfer is. There are some blu-rays that are already infamous for bad transfers, like Patton and the new Gladiator.

If you really want to have your eyeballs scorched, watch The American in Paris ballet on blu-ray. That may possibly be the most gorgeous thing I've ever seen on my television. ;) Though for some reason the shot that most fascinates me from that entire movie takes place right after the ballet, when Leslie Caron runs up the staircase towards Gene Kelly. The shot takes place at night, and is beautifully lit, and she's in this white dress, and in blu-ray the dress looks incredibly filmy and luminescent. You can even see the detail of the netting-like fabric used for the adornments and bows. Stunning.

Really looking forward to that North by Northwest blu-ray. DVDBeaver has a review with screen captures:

At this point I guess it's too much to ask to get a Tyrone Power film in blu-ray. Fox's classics releases are virtually no more. Maybe they'll do Witness for the Prosecution in blu-ray someday, though that's not Fox, that's MGM.

Speaking of Tyrone Power and Fox classics on DVD, I'm wondering if Fox is going to go the DVD-R manufactured on demand route taken by Warner Archives. Universal has just signed a deal with Turner Classic Movies to put out DVD-R MOD discs too. Some of my favorites -- Remember the Night with Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray and The Eagle and the Hawk with Cary Grant and Fredric March -- will be in the first batch.

I'm thinking it's just a matter of time before Fox announces something similar. We might get that last Power box set -- but on DVD-R.

blu-ray

Great, good to know Peachtree, many thanks! It's difficult sometime plowing through the hype so it's good to know this is good hype :-)!

I can well imagine that American/Paris is impressive! (My favorite part is when things get sensual on the fountain between Caron and Kelly--the way that clarinet is played is the most effective I've heard it for that particular passage.

The blu-ray for Power I'd kill for are Blood and Sand, Jesse James and even Prince of Foxes and Marie Antoinette. One would think they'd release one or two titles in the future, who knows.

Re: blu-ray

Sadly, I don't think those titles will be showing up in blu-ray anytime soon. ;(

However, more Linda Darnell is on the way:

Re: blu-ray

Insteresing title. Have never seen this one--have you?

Have to admit, I'm not a Tab Hunter fan--don't get it with him (rather bland actor, IMHO).

Re: blu-ray

Nope, haven't seen that one.

More on Summer Storm

Glenn Kenny enthuses about Summer Storm:

Dave Kehr does too, in the New York Times:

Check out that smokin' hot pic of Linda Darnell in the NY Times!

Re: More on Summer Storm

This is fantastic, Peachtree, grazie :-)!!

Yeah, she was drop-dead gorgeous (turned into a very good actress as well, IMHO)!
