Ty's Postage Stamp - need help

Hi all,

Need help and advice.

I am of several minds as to how to go about approaching the post office about a stamp for Ty.

I understand that online petitions are suspect because there are no signatures so they're hard to verify.

I could put something on Facebook but then I'm afraid someone will decide that Sonny Tufts needs a stamp, and someone else decides that John Garfield needs one, and before you know it, the post office is inundated and Ty's stamp goes out the window.

So I have two questions:

1. Is anyone reading this who lives in the U.S. willing to write to the post office proposing Tyrone for a stamp? I can give you the salient points or a sample letter if you want one.

2. If I have prepaid postcards made up with a message about the stamp to be signed with a person's name and address (which shouldn't be a problem since the p.o. knows where you live anyway), would you be willing to give them out to family and friends? This would be expensive, so I would only want to send people what they can give out so there's no waste. But if you have people who would sign them as a favor, I'd need a number.

3. I will have a petition at the memorial service where people can sign it so I wil have that to send in as well.

4. People COULD start their own petitions, get signatures, and forward them to the post office on their own. What do you think of that? Even if it only had ten names.

Bottom line - this is going to be a hard sell so we need big numbers.

Opinions, please. Thanks.

Re: Ty's Postage Stamp - need help

Great idea Maria and a hugely daunting task, in all likelyhood :-(. I would be happy to send a letter so, yeah, if you have a sample that would be great.

I dunno though, he's not on the radar like some other actors of that era, so a stamp for him alone might prove very tricky indeed.

My unsolicitated opinion is that he would do much better as part of a series, i.e. Swashbucklers of the 30's, 40's etc....or maybe a Film Noir series where "Nightmare Alley" can come into play. No doubt both of these 'series' or something like that have been done already, however. Or, how about a Romantic Screen Couples of the 30's Silver Screen series, or something like that (he and Loretta Young, for starters).

Anywho, that's my two cents worth. You're to be commended for all the work you're putting into this :-)!!!

Joanne: If you look at the list of people who have received stamps, you'll not have heard of many of them. Tyrone belongs in the Legends of Hollywood series just as much as anyone else, and he fits all the criteria. Also, all of the committee are of a certain age, and there are quite a few Latinos on the board.

If anyone can, please drop a letter or postcard to:

Citizens' Stamp Advisory
c/o Stamp Development
U.S. Postal Service
1735 North Lynn St., Suite 5013
Arlington VA 22209-6432

All you have to write is that you are in support of a stamp for Tyrone Power for his centenary, 2014, and add anything else you want - served his country, great actor, anything.

Thanks so much.

Hi Maria, yes will certainly do. Let's face it, it doesn't get any easier than that (just sending a post card to that effect, so I'll certainly do that yes :-).

It's great what you're doing (we might not have all those great TP boxes sets were it not for you!!!!!)

Re: Ty's Postage Stamp - need help

Thanks, Joanne, very much. I was looking at some of the new items you have up and they are really wonderful. You certainly do keep your site up very well.

I realize that this postage stamp thing is a long shot, but I figure if there's enough of a response, even if they turn him down for 2014, they might consider him for a following year, or as you say, for another kind of series of stamps.

I don't know a lot about it, I only know that the Al Jolson people wanted one and because of the blackface issue, they nearly didn't get it. But that was resolved. I'm sure the committee picks people without suggestions, but they invite suggestions, so I have to believe that if there's an overwhelming request, they will at least consider the person. That's why I want to push hard.

Re: Ty's Postage Stamp - need help

Definitely worth doing! Will get a note out this week.

Re: Ty's Postage Stamp - need help

I'm thinking of suggesting him alone and/or part of a swashbuckler series; that might open the door a bit more, perhaps (?)

You're his biggest advocate Maria--working tirelessly, really!

Re: Ty's Postage Stamp - need help

My advice is to go on thetas premise that he is a legend of hollywood, which he is, and deserving of his own stamp. After we see what they have to say, maybe they will plan a series other than the Legends one that would include several people.
