to buy or not to buy.....

We are debating between buying a boat to have in charter and then sail for a year or so, or to just keep chartering. Our big question is - is it ever possible to charter for 10-12 months at a price less than the cost of a used boat? We would be looking for a cat, 38-44 and want to sail in the carribean. Any suggestions?
