infection control (december 8, 2000)

Hi from Filippo, CF Centre of Florence, Italy.

I have a question for everybody:

In your Centres, as for outpatients clinics, do you perform a

segregation of patients according to their colonization,

(particularly of those who are colonized by PA, B.Cepacia and

SA Meticilline resistant) or do you allow them to be at the

Center in the same day and time together with patients without

any colonization or only with SA colonization? In other words,

do you think that separation of patients colonized by PA, BC or

MRSA from those who are not yet colonized or have only SA, is an

effective measure to prevent colonization in these last ?

What is your experience ?

I ask this because in our Centre we have adopted this measure of

strict separation for almost 5 years, but now somebody is

discussing that it would be ineffective and useless.

What do you think ?
