Medals

Can anyone tell me why the dates for the veterans medals were started from 1951, when RAF personnel where in Suez in 1949.

Hi Angela.
I'm not able to provide a definitive answer to your question, however the answer may be that personnel serving prior to 1951 would have been awarded the appropriate General Service medal. The Canal Zone clasp added to that medal was awarded only to those servicemen who served during the declared emergency.You may find the following link of interest.
