For 20 years I served in the largest cavalry unit west of the Mississippi doing campaign style reenacting [we actually live in the saddles, not laid up at some city park] and in that time I have seen literally hundreds of saddles and gear. To the best of my knowledge I never saw a Doug Kidd piece of equipment fail, even under the harshest of conditions. Its the best available....

Doug, thank you for your wonderful friendship and leatherworking guidance to my efforts to portray a Cavalry Saddler Sergeant at Fort Larned (KS) National Historic Site. I thoroughly have enjoyed spending time with you in your shop and the time you spent with me in my "field" saddler shop at the National Cavalry Competition last September (2011) at Fort Reno OK. Your expertise have made my living history efforts more realistic and enjoyable. Ilook forward to spending more time with you.

Doug, I have never forgotten your amazing shop and work. I just opened and shared my GI Joe collection with my boys for the first time. A collection inspired by you as I visited your shop as the prop master on the film "Frank and Jesse" in 1994(?). Still have a collection? Hope you and your family are well. Email and let me know!

Word of mouth, I was told Doug was the best.

Comments:

I bought a custom made Texas saddle from Doug in early 2007 and apart from the '59 Mac I bought from him in 2004 I've barely sat in anything else since. The Texas saddle instantly became my every day saddle and I've since sold all of my modern saddles.

Last year I left a friend holding my horse, a portly 16 hand Suffolk Punch cross, while I took a comfort break. The friend was an idiot and released the horse to roll over twice with the saddle on. It's still good as new. I am very impressed with Doug's horse equipments.

I have a pretty nice 1904 Mac that I am trying to restore and hopefully on my next trip to Louisianna, I might get a chance to visit your shop and we can talk and maybe fit this saddle out. Your work is very impressive. Fraternally Yours, Joe Overstreet
