I’m currently looking to purchase a new laptop for software development, and I’m considering an Intel i7 model. My work mainly involves coding in various IDEs, running local development environments, and occasionally using virtual machines. I also perform light tasks like browsing the web and document editing.

I’m wondering if the Intel i7 is overkill for these tasks, or if the extra performance would significantly improve my workflow. Would an Intel i5 laptop or a lower-end processor be sufficient for most development work, or is the i7 really worth the investment in terms of speed and multitasking?

I’d appreciate hearing from anyone who’s used an Intel i7 laptop for software development and how it has impacted your experience.
